Pyogenic Granuloma Associated With Hypertensive Medication: A Case Report

Publisher: International Journal of Medical Science and Innovative Research

Year: 2017

Pyogenic granuloma is a relatively common mucocutaneous lesion seen in the oral cavity, as a response to some underlying irritating factor. Clinically oral pyogenic granuloma is seen as a smooth exophytic lesion with usually haemorrhagic base. The condition is frequently associated with periodontal pain and discomfort, in some cases interfering with mastication and creating esthetic problems. The growth is typically seen in young adults, with occurrence in the oral cavity, especially the gingiva, this case report describes a pyogenic granuloma in a male patient, discussing the clinical features and histopathologic features and also the successful management of the lesion

Regenerative/Resective Approach for Grade III Furcation Involvement – A Case Report

Publisher: Indian Journal of Applied Research

Year: 2020

Introduction: Teeth with furcation involvement can be maintained in a state of function for a longer period of time if appropriately treated and if the patient is motivated adequately. This report highlights the effect of regenerative and resective therapy in the management of grade III furcation involvement. Observation: A 48 years old male patient was evaluated for furcation involvement with respect to the root canal treated lower right rst molar tooth. Grade III furcation involvement was noted for which regenerative therapy was attempted with platelet rich brin (PRF) and bone grafts. After 2 years of follow up, the furcation involvement still persisted and patient had a complaint of food lodgement. Hence, resective osseous surgery (tunnel preparation) was done to make the furcation ease for maintaining oral hygiene. Commentary: In cases of periodontal loss, periodontal regenerative therapy must be the rst treatment of choice. However, regeneration of grade III furcation involvement is more challenging and very few reports are available in the literature. Conclusion: The selection of cases for regenerative or resective therapy depends on the clinicians' knowledge and practice. The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to provide a dentition that will function in health and comfort for life

Comparison of Minimally Invasive Coronally Advanced Flap (MICAF) vs. Modified Coronally Advanced Flap (MCAF) for Multiple Adjacent Gingival Recession Defects

Publisher: Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry (J. Esthet. Restor. Dent.)

Year: 2018

Aim The aim of this review is to assess study design and risk of bias related to primary outcome in recently published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in periodontology. Method An electronic (Medline, EMBASE and Cochrane library) and a manual search were completed to detect RCTs in humans, with an outcome in the field of periodontology and published in English from January 2018 up to March 2020. Results Data extraction of 318 publications meeting the inclusion criteria was performed by two reviewers. Most studies adopted a parallel-group superiority design in a university setting. Overall, 54% of papers reported the primary outcome and relative sample size calculation, while only 37% also included reproducibility estimates relative to the primary outcome. Papers published in journals with higher impact factors had better compliance with primary outcome reporting and lower overall risk of bias scores. Conclusion Improvements in the quality of RCTs in periodontology are still needed. The importance of defining a clinically relevant study primary outcome and building the study around it needs to be emphasized. Furthermore, RCTs in periodontology could consider, when appropriate, some of the study design options which facilitate application of the principles of personalized medicine.

Knowledge, Attitude and Oral Care Practices for Preventing Ventilator‑Associated Pneumonia Among Critical Care Nurses

Publisher: Indian Journal of Dental Research

Year: 2020

Background: A cross-sectional study was conducted among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses in private hospitals in India to identify knowledge and practice of ICU nurses in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Methods: Knowledge of 135 nurses working in ICU was tested using a questionnaire consisting of 18 questions. Fourteen forms were excluded from the statistical analysis due to incomplete data entry by the participants. The data of 121 filled questionnaires were analyzed. The information letters, consent forms, and questionnaires were handed to ICU nurses by Research assistant. Data were coded and entered into SPSS version for descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: A majority of the participants perceived oral care as a necessity in all critically ill patients. Nurses were generally aware of the most likely mechanism of acquiring pneumonia. The type and frequency of oral care varied widely. Many of them stated that they had adequate supplies to provide oral care. Although a majority of nurses had some formal training in oral care, they would appreciate an opportunity to enhance and improve their knowledge and skills. Conclusion: The methods of oral care provided vary widely. In summary, randomized controlled trial to date has demonstrated that tooth brushing is associated with a trend toward lower rates of VAP in intubated mechanically ventilated critically ill patients. But it is also to be noted that there was no clear difference between electric and manual tooth brushing. In-house training and workshop can provide required skills needed for the betterment of the treatment provided.
